The Meaning Of The Miraculous Medal And Why Catholics Wear It

A Gift From Heaven
In 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a young French nun, Saint Catherine Labouré, in Paris. During the apparition, Mary showed Catherine a medal with rays of light flowing from her hands and asked that it be struck and shared with the world. Mary promised that those who wore it with faith would receive great graces.
This became known as the Miraculous Medal — not because the medal itself has power, but because of the miracles of conversion, healing, and protection that God has granted through Mary’s intercession.

The Symbolism of the Medal
Every detail on the Miraculous Medal has deep meaning:
• Mary standing on the globe, crushing a serpent → her role in God’s victory over evil.
• The rays from her hands → graces poured out upon those who ask for them.
• The “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee” prayer → a reminder of Mary’s Immaculate Conception and her constant intercession.
• The reverse side → a cross entwined with the letter M, showing Mary’s closeness to Jesus, and two hearts: the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced by a sword.
It is a devotion that combines faith, protection, and a visible reminder of God’s love through Mary.

Why Catholics Wear the Miraculous Medal
For Catholics around the world, wearing the Miraculous Medal is an act of faith and devotion. It is:
• A reminder of Mary’s presence in daily life.
• A protection against spiritual battles.
• A silent prayer worn close to the heart.
• A way to share the faith when someone notices and asks about the medal.
It’s not just jewelry — it’s a sacramental: a holy sign that helps open hearts to God’s grace.
